Time flies, and it's crucial to keep abreast of the latest technological developments. As of Tuesday, October 10, 2023, extended support for Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 has come to an end. Why is this so important?
Microsoft is clear on this: "After this date, these products will no longer receive security updates, non-security updates, bug fixes, technical support or online technical content updates."
Migrating to a newer version of Windows Server is essential, and you have two options.
1. Provision a new machine based on the new system, which involves a complete migration of roles and applications. This ensures a clean and secure foundation, but can take longer.
2. Perform an in-place upgrade to Windows Server 2016 or 2019, and then eventually to Windows Server 2022, if necessary. This upgrade process has been enhanced and is supported by Microsoft.
Keep in mind that Windows Server 2019 extended support will end in January 2029, and Windows Server 2022 extended support will end on October 14, 2031.
